Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro Launch with Android 13 and Tensor G2 Chip

The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro smartphones were officially released at an event titled "MadeByGoogle" on Thursday (6/10/2022) United States time, after being shown at the annual Google I/O conference last May.

These two phones are the successors of last year's Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro models.

The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro are now powered by Google's latest generation chipset, the Google Tensor G2. Both of these phones come standard with the newest Android 13 operating system.

The Google Tensor G2 chip is built with 4nm fabrication.   Google claims that the Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) on the Tensor G2 chip can perform Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) processing 60 percent faster and 20 percent more efficiently than Google's Tensor chip embedded in the Pixel 6 series.

The Tensor G2 chip is also said to improve photography features on Google Pixel 7 series phones, particularly "Photo Unblur." It employs more advanced AI processing to remove blur and noise from photos taken with any old phone.

The Tensor G2 chip has a Mali-G710 MC10 graphics card (GPU), which is said to improve ML processing by 35 percent over the Mali-G78 MP20 GPU in last year's Tensor chip.

The New Rear Camera Module

In addition to embedding a new generation chip, the Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro has a more modern design than their predecessors. This is because Google redesigned the rear camera module on its latest cellphone.

Both are still rectangular camera modules that run horizontally from edge to edge on the top side of the phone's back.

The difference is that the camera module appears to have more rounded sides and a color that matches the color of the phone's body. Previously, the camera module on the Pixel 6 series was entirely black.

Since the module color matches the body color, users can see the camera lens in a pill (oval) shape that houses the two rear cameras on the "regular" Google Pixel 7. While the Google Pixel 7 Pro has a pill camera lens and a circle that houses three rear cameras.

Between the two, the Google Pixel 7 Pro is positioned as the superior model because it is equipped with a number of more capable specifications.

For screen specifications, the Pixel 7 Pro carries a 6.71-inch AMOLED panel with a Quad HD Plus resolution (1,440 x 3,120 pixels), a refresh rate of 10-120 Hz, and a maximum screen brightness of 1,500 nits.

This phone screen supports an in-display fingerprint scanner and is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus.

The screen has a punch hole that contains a 10.8 MP (f/2.2) selfie camera.

There are also three rear cameras consisting of a 50 MP main camera (f/1.9, PDAF, OIS), a 12 MP ultrawide camera (f/2.2), and a 48 MP telephoto camera (f/3.5, 5x optical zoom).

In terms of memory, the Google Pixel 7 Pro has 12 GB of RAM and 128/256/512 GB of media storage. This phone is supported by a 5,000 mAh battery with 30-watt fast charging.

Unlike the pro version with three cameras, the "regular" Google Pixel 7 only has two rear cameras consisting of a 50 MP (f/1.9) main camera and a 12 MP (f/2.2) ultrawide camera.

This phone has 8GB of RAM and 128/256GB of media storage. The Pixel 7 battery has a capacity of 4,355 mAh and supports fast charging at 30 watts.

For the rest, the "regular" Google Pixel 7 specs are similar to the Pixel 7 Pro. For example, the Pixel 7 also has a 10.8 MP (f/2.2) front camera. The phone screen also supports an in-display fingerprint scanner and is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus glass.
